Beginning October 1, 2026, a minimum 48-hour waiting period is required between completing a marriage license application in the Town Clerk’s office, and the issuance of the marriage license to the couple.

What does this mean for the applicants/couple getting married?

Obtaining their marriage license now is a two-step process. This means that:

Step #1 - The couple will come into the Town Clerk's office to apply for their marriage license on the agreed upon appointment date.

Step #2 - After at least 48 hours has elapsed, one or both applicants will return in person to obtain the issued license.

Use the following as a guide:

Couple comes in to apply on Monday at 10:00am - one or both can pick up the license anytime after 10:00am on Wednesday

Couple comes in to apply on Tuesday at 4:00pm - one or both can pick up the license anytime after 4:00pm on Thursday

Applying for Marriage Licenses

Requirements

Marriage Licenses in Connecticut can be obtained in the Town Clerk’s office of the town in which the marriage is taking place for a fee of $50.00.

When applying for a marriage License, both parties to the marriage, meeting the eligibility requirements, must appear and provide proper photo Identification.  Please find a list of the Windsor Locks Justices of the Peace here. If you find you need assistance with scheduling your time with a Justice of the Peace, our office is happy to help!

The application is considered complete once both applicants  have appeared in person at the Town Clerk’s office, completed all sections of the marriage license, sign, date, and swear to the information before the registrar. If the applicants sign on different dates, the later signing date becomes the application date.

The 48-hour waiting period begins when the second applicant signs and dates the marriage license in the Town Clerk’s office, and the registrar signs the license section. Couples must have their ceremony performed within 65 days from the application
