In yesterday’s update, I explained that we have entered a period of sustained community transmission of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). I noted that it would be unreasonable to assume that the one individual confirmed to have contracted COVID-19 was the only person afflicted in town. Today, we received notice from the Connecticut Department of Public Health of the second confirmed case of COVID-19 involving a Windsor Locks resident. The person is 63 years of age and taking all necessary steps to limit the exposure of others to the disease. Again, we should assume that at this time there are additional town residents who have contracted the virus.

With regard to precautions to slow the spread of COVID-19, residents should already be following the guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Connecticut Department of Public Health. All residents should be practicing social distancing. Adults and children should remain home as much as possible.   The symptoms of COVID-19 are a dry cough, fever and shortness of breath. Stay home if you are sick except to seek emergency medical care or if advised by your physician. Avoid contact with people who are sick, frequently wash hands with soap and water for a minimum of twenty seconds. Cover your cough and avoid touching your face. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, table and countertops.

Although we may continue to get additional updates as to specific cases from the Connecticut Department of Public Health, it is unlikely that we will issue further updates on specific cases. Should additional precautionary steps be recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the Connecticut Department of Public Health we will of course issue an update at that time. In the meantime, continue to do what you are already doing until further notice. The more diligent we are in following the recommended precautions, the sooner we will reverse the upward trend of transmission.
